Our History
Family Favorite Since 1933
In the summer of 1933, the Swedish heat record of 38 degrees was set, which still stands today. Perhaps the scorching weather prompted some Västervik residents to take the plunge and create the AB Lysingsbadet bathing area. A Småland oasis for healthy swims and fresh sports – completely in line with the spirit of the times.
A Swedish Holiday Classic
In 1937, the city of Västervik took over Lysingsbadet, just as the word ‘leisure’ was on everyone’s lips. The following year, for the first time, Swedish workers could enjoy a full two-week paid vacation. In 1945, the first cottages, Aspö, were built at Lysingsbadet – cozy vintage gems that are still loved by many. In the 1950s, during the era of mass motorization, more and more caravans were seen at the campsite in Västervik. New concepts such as children’s holidays are gaining ground.
Lysingsbadet Becomes Västervik Resort
In 1964, Lysingsbadet became fully municipally owned and remained so for just over 40 years. When the historic camping and bathing facility was transformed into a municipal company called Västervik Resort AB in 2008, it was with the bold aim of becoming Sweden’s leading family resort. The development towards a complete destination for everyone who wants a comfortable and active family experience in Sweden can begin.
Everything in One Place
Today, anyone who has visited the campsite can probably attest that the 5-star Västervik Resort is much more than just a place to swim and sleep. Sure, the accommodation is very important (we provide everything from tent pitches to hotel cabins!) as is the swimming (the opening of an adventure pool and spa in 2014 is an important milestone in our history), but above all we offer a comfortable, stress-free all-in-one solution for a successful children’s vacation in Sweden, full of delicious food, fun activities for everyone and professional shows. All in one, in the middle of the archipelago panorama, fifteen minutes on foot from the summer town of Västervik and just under an hour by car from Astrid Lindgren’s World.
Västervik Resort 2024
In 2024, we are building 11 new hotel cottages down by the sea right next to Timmerbyn. These 6-bed cottages are reminiscent of nature and have the feeling of living in the middle of a lush oasis, with the water right outside the door. Open the patio doors and just breathe in the lovely fresh air and enjoy!
We are changing our booking system to Compusoft to give you as a guest a hassle-free experience with a simple and fast booking for your adventure.
Västervik Resort 2023
This year, Västervik Resort turns 90 years old, and we are investing heavily to raise the level of the experience. Most cottages have undergone both an exterior and interior renovation, the area has been cleaned up, and more guest-friendly places are created in nature.
A major branding project will start in the fall of 2022 to the spring of 2023, when a new graphic profile will be developed and the tagline is Carefree moments – where land meets sea and Pärlan in Sweden’s most beautiful archipelago is born.
Västervik Resort 2021-2022
The resort begins a major project to renovate the cabin village both inside and out, and parts of the campsite get bigger and better pitches. Västervik Resort’s first cabins Aspö from 1945 are moved down to the water and a completely new cottage village is established called Fiskebyn.
Västervik Resort 2020
The resort is characterized by concerns about the pandemic like the rest of the world but still focuses on the summer, and the message of safety and security establishes itself with a greater focus on hygiene, distance, and nature moments with the immediate family.
Västervik Resort 2018
This year, when the baths turn 85 and the resort 10, we are, as always, aiming ahead and delivering high pressure on the experience front. We celebrate the anniversaries with a new, inviting entrance, newly renovated apartments, a brand-new show group, a larger children’s house, and more outdoor activities than ever.
Quite a long time ago, in 1933 to be precise, AB Lysingsbadet was formed by some 60 private individuals who wanted to start a bathing area. Four years later, the city of Västervik takes over Lysingsbadet. The camping fee is 30 “öre”. In 1945, the first cabins were built, Aspö, which are still very popular with our guests.
At the end of the 1950s, caravans began to take their place in Swedish society and in 1958 it was noted that 60 caravans had visited Lysingsbadet. At this time there were about 45 cabins on the Lysingsbadet site. Caravans became increasingly popular during the 1960s and by 1963 the number of caravans had risen to 810. A cabin costs about SEK 16 per day.
In 1964, Lysingsbadet was fully municipalized – and remained so until 2007.
In 2008, Lysingsbadet entered a new phase as a wholly owned municipal company and changed its name to Västervik Resort AB.
In the years that followed, a major development of Västervik Resort AB took place to the complete resort facility we are today.
In 2014, we opened the doors to the indoor water park, which offers a wonderful Mediterranean feeling all year round. Adventure mixed with relaxation and good food, both indoors and outdoors.
